Exam time may be a very stressful time in every student’s life but it is important to learn how to handle it. One thing that will really help is good time management. Stay organised, make a list of everything you have to do, starting with your priorities and most urgent matters and finishing with tasks which don’t require immediate attention.
Even if you may believe this or not, a healthy diet is another aspect that will help you handle exam stress. You know the saying, healthy mind in a healthy body. Therefore, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, eat more fish, eat less saturated fat and sugar, avoid fizzy and sugary drinks and very important-don’t skip breakfast, the most important meal of the day. However, don’t feel guilty if you are craving and eating some sweets as long as you consume a decent amount.
And speaking of a healthy body…physical exercise is a great way of relieving stress. I can tell you this from my own experience, after a stressful day of school and study, after spending the whole day sitting on a chair, it feels great to go to the gym. That helps me exercise my muscles and relax my brain and I feel physically drained but relaxed after a good workout. It is definitely something worth trying
Make sure you also get enough sleep, to give your brain and body time to recover the loss of energy and to charge. It is ideal to study during the day and sleep at night. The time interval in which your brain gets the best rest is between 22:00 and 00:00 so try to go to bed early and wake up early rather than staying up at night.
Talking to someone about what you are going through may help as well. Talking to friends, tutors, family and anyone who makes you feel comfortable. You can also find support at the chapel on campus and the team there is more than happy to help and counsel people of all religions.
Don’t be shy to reach for help and remember to take good care of yourselves. Good luck!
