On Thursday the 6th of December 2012 the Green Lean Fighting Machine at the CCCU Sports Centre launched their Green Impact efforts for the 2012/13 session. It was an excellent event, with superb eco-information boards that had been created by the team’s leader Natalie Goldring. Also, there were homemade chocolate brownies, some mince pies, mulled wine and cheese on crackers with chutney made from the Adopt-a-Planter tomatoes & chillies!
The University of Greenwich Engineering department had kindly loaned their pedal-powering bicycle and this bike was hooked up so that attendees at the Green Impact launch event could use kinetic energy to light up the Christmas tree. It was quite hard work to get those 10+ 60 watt incandescent light-bulbs to shine brightly… The aim is to purchase one of these pedal-powering bicycles for the CCCU Sports Centre, to be used in the fitness suite. Ask about the ‘People Power Project’ when you are down there for your gym visit.
(That’s our very own Maz Hamilton from the Futures Initiative project powering the tree, there!)
The Green Lean Fighting Machine did well in the Green Impact project last year, obtaining a Bronze award. This year they are going for GOLD!
If you are interested in starting a Green Impact team, please see more on the University’s Sustainability webpages here: http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/projects/sustainable-development/Green-Impact/green-impact-index.asp or leave a message below for the attention of Sustainability Projects Officer Lucy Brown.
There is NO DEADLINE FOR STARTING A GREEN IMPACT TEAM!
However, to be in with a chance of winning an award (Bronze, Silver or Gold) at our Sustainability Showcase event in May, the deadline for submission of the Green Impact online workbook is Friday the 1st of March. Student-led audits will be taking place in the week commencing the 11th of March. We will be advertising soon for student auditors – which looks great on your CV – so keep an eye out and watch this space if you want to take part!
